  What is the CRE?

Spanish Residents Councils (CREs) are consultative bodies attached to Spanish consulates that serve as a bridge of communication between Spanish citizens residing abroad and their consular offices. Established under Royal Decree 1960/2009 and Ministerial Order AEC/2172/2010, CREs play a pivotal role in addressing the interests and concerns of the Spanish expatriate community.

CREs are established in consular districts with a minimum of 1,200 Spanish citizens registered in the Registry of Absent Resident Electors (CERA). Currently, there are 38 CREs operating worldwide.

The CRE of Sydney specifically serves Spanish citizens residing in the Northern Territory (NT), Queensland (QLD), New South Wales (NSW), and the Pacific Islands. Its mission is to advise the head of the consular office, channeling the concerns and proposals of the Spanish community to improve consular services and represent the interests of Spaniards abroad.

Therefore, the CRE of Sydney plays a crucial role in the lives of Spanish residents in its area, ensuring that their rights, needs, and opinions are adequately represented and addressed.

In short, CREs are the official voice of the Spanish community abroad.
